Amazon fees on heavy equipment: what a sale really costs

Heavy, bulky equipment carries a different fee picture than small parts. The referral fee is a percentage of the price, while fulfillment and storage grow with size and weight. Here is how the pieces add up.

What referral fee does Amazon charge on lawn equipment?

Short answer

Amazon lists Lawn and Garden and Tools and Home Improvement at a 15% referral fee, and Business, Industrial, and Scientific Supplies and Automotive and Powersports at 12%, each with a $0.30 minimum. You pay the percentage of the total price or the minimum, whichever is greater, on every item sold.

Figures as shown on Amazon's pricing page on October 30, 2026. The category a product is listed in decides the rate, so check the category before you model a price. A Professional selling plan adds $39.99 a month for the seller.

How does Amazon price fulfillment for heavy items?

Short answer

Fulfillment by Amazon charges per unit, and Amazon says the cost is based on the product's price, weight and dimensions. It covers picking, packing, shipping and customer service. Large, heavy equipment falls into Amazon's bigger size tiers, so check the current rate for your exact packed dimensions and weight before you set a price.

Source: Fulfillment by Amazon. Amazon publishes per-unit rates by size tier in Seller Central and in its revenue calculator. We could not load those tier tables in a form we could cite on October 30, 2026, so this guide does not quote them; run your packed dimensions through the calculator linked from that page.

The other route is Fulfilled by Merchant, where you or your seller ship each order yourself (How to sell on Amazon). For freight-sized items, compare both.

What do storage and returns add?

Short answer

Storage is charged monthly on the space your inventory takes in Amazon's network, measured in cubic feet. Items stored more than 181 days add an aged inventory charge. A returns processing fee applies when Amazon gives the buyer free return shipping. Big items that sell slowly feel all three.

All three are described on Amazon's Fulfillment by Amazon page. Seasonal equipment adds a timing question: stock that arrives too early waits in storage, and stock left after the season ages. Size first orders to demand and send stock in waves.

What does the referral fee come to on one sale?

Short answer

Take a hypothetical tow-behind spreader listed at $600 in Lawn and Garden. The referral fee is 15% of $600, which is $90, because that is greater than the $0.30 minimum. The seller then pays fulfillment, storage and any returns on top, which for a heavy item can exceed the referral fee.

  1. Price: $600, a hypothetical figure for illustration only.
  2. Referral fee: 15% x $600 = $90 (Amazon pricing).
  3. Amount before fulfillment, storage, returns and ads: $600 minus $90 = $510.
  4. Next: add the per-unit fulfillment fee for the packed size and weight, monthly storage, and returns at your expected rate.

That last step is why larger and heavier items usually need deeper wholesale pricing or an ad budget from the brand before an authorized seller can carry them. The guide to Amazon routes for equipment brands shows who carries these costs on each route.
