Selling on Amazon

ASIN

Amazon Standard Identification Number: a unique 10-character code Amazon assigns to every product listed in its store. Creating a new product detail page gets a new ASIN, and the ASIN shows in the product's web address after /dp/. Source: Amazon, Understanding ASINs

Product detail page

The page that shows what a product is. A listing pairs that page with an offer: the price and shipping terms one seller sets. When several sellers offer the same product, every offer is viewable from the same detail page. Source: Amazon, How to sell on Amazon

Seller accounts

Seller Central

Amazon's web hub for sellers, where a seller account and its settings are managed. A brand that sells to Amazon as a vendor signs in to Vendor Central instead. Source: Amazon, How to sell on Amazon

Selling plan

Amazon offers two. The Professional plan is $39.99 a month however many items you sell, plus selling fees. The Individual plan is $0.99 per item sold, plus selling fees, and Amazon suggests it for sellers under 40 items a month. Source: Amazon, How to sell on Amazon

Third-party seller (3P)

A business that sells on Amazon from its own seller account: it lists the product, sets the price, ships orders or uses FBA, and pays a plan fee plus referral fees. Selling it yourself and authorizing one reseller are both 3P routes; the guide to Amazon routes compares them.

First-party vendor (1P)

A brand that sells to Amazon, so Amazon becomes its customer instead of the end buyer. The terms are agreed with Amazon, so ask Amazon directly how pricing, orders and listing control would work for your line before comparing it with the other routes.

Fees and fulfillment

Referral fee

The fee Amazon charges on every item sold: a percentage of the total price or a minimum amount, whichever is greater. Lawn and Garden and Tools and Home Improvement are 15%. Business, Industrial, and Scientific Supplies and Automotive and Powersports are 12%. The minimum is $0.30. Source: Amazon, Sell on Amazon: Pricing

Fulfillment by Amazon (FBA)

Amazon picks, packs and ships each order and handles customer service and returns. The per-unit fulfillment fee is based on the product's price, weight and dimensions, and FBA products are eligible for free two-day shipping through Prime. Source: Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon

Fulfilled by Merchant (FBM)

The seller ships each order itself instead of using FBA, for the whole catalog or alongside FBA. For freight-sized equipment, price both before you set a price on Amazon. Source: Amazon, How to sell on Amazon

Returns processing fee

An FBA charge on orders where Amazon gives the buyer free return shipping. On a heavy item it comes on top of the referral and fulfillment fees. Source: Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon

Storage and the fee stack

Monthly storage fee

An FBA charge for the space your stock takes in Amazon's fulfillment network, based on its daily average volume in cubic feet. Seasonal equipment that arrives early pays it while it waits for the season. Source: Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon

Aged inventory surcharge

A monthly FBA charge on items stored in a fulfillment center for more than 181 days. Stock left over after a short selling season is how an equipment line usually runs into it. Source: Amazon, Fulfillment by Amazon

Fee stack

Our term for every Amazon cost on one sale added together: referral fee, fulfillment, storage, returns and ads. Crew Grade works it out for each product in the fit check, because it decides which wholesale terms can work. The guide to fees on heavy equipment shows how it adds up.

Brand protection

Amazon Brand Registry

A free Amazon program for trademark owners. A brand needs a logo with its brand name permanently affixed to its products or packaging, and a pending or registered trademark from a country with an Amazon store. The trademark owner enrolls, then can add an authorized agent as a user. Source: Amazon, Amazon Brand Registry

Word mark and design mark

The two trademark types Brand Registry accepts: a text-based mark (word mark), or an image-based mark with words, letters or numbers (design mark). A pending application can qualify. In the US, applications are filed with the USPTO. Source: Amazon, Brand Registry requirements

Report a Violation

The Brand Registry tool for reporting suspected IP infringement, store policy violations and regulatory compliance concerns in one place. A brand can use it from the Brand Registry portal even without a selling account. Being an unauthorized seller is not one of its report types. Source: Amazon, Amazon Brand Registry

Counterfeits and resellers

Counterfeit

Amazon defines it as an unlawful total or partial reproduction of a registered trademark, including a mark very similar to one, used in selling a product. A genuine unit from a seller you did not authorize is not a counterfeit. Source: Amazon, Project Zero

Test buy

An order placed from a suspect seller so the brand can inspect what arrives: a counterfeit, a genuine unit from a dealer, or a used item sold as new. Amazon recommends one to confirm a counterfeit before removing listings through Project Zero. Source: Amazon, Project Zero

Project Zero

An Amazon program that lets a brand remove counterfeit listings itself, right away. To qualify, the brand must be the rights owner of a registered trademark and have used Report a Violation for trademark infringement in the last six months, with at least a 90% acceptance rate. Source: Amazon, Project Zero

Transparency

Amazon's product serialization and anti-counterfeiting program: every unit carries a unique code that Amazon checks so only authentic units ship. It needs Brand Registry, an active registered trademark and a GTIN for each product. Codes cost $0.05 each for 1 to 1,000,000, and less at higher volume. Source: Amazon, Transparency

Unauthorized seller

A seller offering a brand's products without the brand's written authorization. When the units are genuine, Report a Violation does not cover it, so dealer terms and an authorized seller of your own do the work. The guide to unauthorized sellers covers the steps.

Price and authorization

Minimum advertised price (MAP)

A brand's own policy on how low its resellers may advertise a product. Amazon is not a party to it. The FTC says a manufacturer may deal only with retailers who agree to its resale price policy and may stop dealing with one that does not. Federal law judges such policies under a rule of reason, and some state laws differ. Source: Federal Trade Commission, Manufacturer-imposed requirements

Suggested retail price (MSRP)

A price the manufacturer suggests. The FTC notes that the key word is suggested: a dealer is free to set the retail price of the products it sells, and a manufacturer may choose not to deal with dealers who do not follow its suggested price. Source: Federal Trade Commission, Manufacturer-imposed requirements

Letter of authorization

A signed letter from the brand owner that names one seller as authorized to sell named products on a named marketplace, with dates and conditions such as following the MAP policy. It is not a supply contract. The authorization letter guide includes a template.

Authorized reseller

A seller the brand has authorized in writing, with stock bought from the brand or its distributor. In the model Crew Grade runs, the reseller buys at wholesale, lists on its own seller account, holds the brand's MAP and owns any unsold stock. How it works has the four steps.

Product IDs and ads

GTIN

Global Trade Item Number: a globally unique GS1 number for a product. GTIN-12 is the UPC format used mainly in North America, GTIN-13 is used mainly outside it, and GTIN-14 identifies cases and other groupings. A few items can use single GTINs; a growing line usually gets a GS1 Company Prefix. Source: GS1 US, What is a GTIN?

UPC

Universal Product Code. GS1 US notes it is often used interchangeably with GTIN or barcode. Strictly, the UPC-A barcode is the carrier, and the 12-digit GTIN-12 is the number it carries. Source: GS1 US, What is a GTIN?

A+ Content

Richer content on a brand's listings: videos, enhanced images and product comparison charts, offered through Brand Registry. Amazon notes that a brand enrolled without a selling account does not get it. Source: Amazon, Brand Registry requirements
